Featured video: "New York City | "Color Commentary" on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera" by H. Paul Moon

At Vimeo, the caption says: Within the week of posting, my NYC test run of the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera went north of 3k playbacks, seeming sensible now to complement with a split-screen comparison of the untouched footage straight from the camera, alongside that finished product after color correction/grading. I have no delusions of being a studio auteur, who could justify a braggart director's commentary, but after thinking about the option to write a long, wordy blog post, I figured it's easier and better all-around just to talk over my footage. It's a visual medium anyway, and I'm sort of surprised there aren't more of these. Would love to see yours, too. The video streams by default in full 1080p high definition, so if you get jitters, click the HD icon in-frame to reduce your playback resolution. For reference, here's the original seven-minute film: http://vimeo.com/hpmoon/nyc. As I say at the end of this commentary, please add your comments below, and please share your work as it happens by joining the User Group: http://vimeo.com/groups/blackmagic http://facebook.com/BMCCusers http://twitter.com/BMCCusers TECHNICAL NOTES: Filmed handheld on a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (http://bhpho.to/bmccpckt), using a single lens (Panasonic 12-35mm, continuous f2.8 aperture, optically stabilized H-HS12035 | http://focuspull.in/hs12035). Shooting was on September 1 and 2, 2013, with post-production on September 7 and this commentary on September 12. Edited and graded in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, with clip-by-clip balancing adjustments using Fast Color Corrector, then applying an Adjustment Layer over the entire sequence with FilmConvert Pro 2, using its Blackmagic Cinema Camera profile and selecting the classic film stock emulation of KODAK VISION3 250D Color Negative Film 5207/7207 (with vintage Super 16mm film grain to match the feel -- and the actual size -- of the BMPC's digital sensor).

Featured video: "New York City | Breaking in the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera" by H. Paul Moon

At Vimeo, the caption says: On August 29, there were just a handful of Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras (BMPCs) in circulation, but I managed to get one. That weekend, I took a visit to New York City as my occasion to break it in. Manhattan has been a limitless source of inspiration for people far more talented than me, but the Blackmagic technology, coming to market in such a versatile size, invited this cinematic tone poem which might, even so, look different. Instead of creating something like a tourism video, I wanted to try and capture the human energy of the city that New Yorkers themselves know best, driven by the extraordinary music of Richard Danielpour that I came across recently (ringing in my head all weekend as I captured these shots). True to the elegant simplicity of the BMPC (http://bhpho.to/bmccpckt), I shot the entire piece handheld, using a single lens (Panasonic 12-35mm, continuous f2.8 aperture, optically stabilized H-HS12035 | http://focuspull.in/hs12035). Shooting was over the course of two days, September 1 and 2, gathering well under an hour of raw footage which was all that could fit onto a flash card using ProRes 422 HQ anyway. In post-production on September 7, I performed clip-by-clip balancing adjustments using Fast Color Corrector in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, then applied an Adjustment Layer over the entire sequence with FilmConvert Pro 2, using its Blackmagic Cinema Camera profile and selecting the classic film stock emulation of KODAK VISION3 250D Color Negative Film 5207/7207 (adding vintage Super 16mm film grain to match the feel -- and the actual size -- of the BMPC's digital sensor). The BMPC concept has a long way to go; it doesn't live up to its promises in terms of dealing with highlights (those dreaded white orbs), its batteries last a New York minute, and its interface is wonky, but I'm excited by the latitude that it buys me for image corrections in post, given its portable form factor which really suits my working style. If you're interested in seeing the creations and comments and tips of other filmmakers using this camera, join the User Group community that I created at: http://vimeo.com/groups/blackmagic http://facebook.com/BMCCusers http://twitter.com/BMCCusers [Note: This video streams by default in full 1080p high definition. Featured video: "The Voice of Philadelphia" by Bob Krist

At Vimeo, the caption says: The Wanamaker Grand Court Organ, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the largest functioning musical instrument in the world, located within the magnificent 7-story Grand Court, at Macy’s Center City (formerly Wanamaker’s department store). Originally built for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, it came to Philadelphia when retail pioneer John Wanamaker purchased the instrument for his new store. The Grand Court Organ made its debut in 1911 and has given concerts no less than twice a day Monday through Saturday, since then. When the organ arrived in 1909 it had over 10,000 pipes. Between 1911 and 1930 Rodman Wanamaker (John’s son) had the instrument tripled in size and today the instrument has 28,677 pipes in 463 ranks. The console consists of six manuals with an array of stops and controls that command the organ, and features the instrumentation of 3 symphony orchestras. The instrument requires constant care and maintenance to be able to give the twice-a-day free concerts by renowned organist Peter Richard Conte. This summer, curator Curt Mangel will take it off line for three weeks to install a new “brain” into the organ and refurbish the console area, which will be the organ’s first official "vacation" during business hours in its 103 year history. www.wanamakerorgan.com

New Vimeo Staff Pick: "Doomed: a biological cartoon!" by El Señor Studio

At Vimeo, the caption says: El Señor Studio has the honour to present the failures of the natural selection. A set of strange creatures whose instincts instead of focusing on survival seem doomed them to an absurd and comic extinction, in the presence of the astonished gaze of the narrator. The character of the Narrator was a documentary star, but unfortunately for him, the good times are over and he is forced to accept this strange documentary, which he considered far below its potential.

New Vimeo Staff Pick: "Namibian Nights" by Squiver

At Vimeo, the caption says: It's not easy to come up with something new when you visit the same place every year for more than a decade. Over the years Marsel has created the most extensive and most popular night photography portfolio of Namibia on this planet, and two years ago he decided it was time to take it to the next level. The idea was to create a night photography timelapse video featuring his most popular subjects in this amazing country: the fairytale-like quivertrees and the eery, dead camelthorn trees in Deadvlei - something that had never been done before. But instead of going for static scenes, Marsel decided to add movement to the scenes by using a dolly system. All scenes were shot during the night with Nikon D3, D3s and D4 cameras. We used small headlights for selectively lighting trees and rocks, and we sometimes used the moon. The brighter the scene, the more moon there was at the time. For the arch scene we timed our shoot exactly with moonset, which involved quite a bit of calculating and planning. But the hardest one of all was probably the mist scene in Deadvlei. Mist in Deadvlei only occurs around five times a year, so we had to keep a close eye on the weather predictions and many attempts were unsuccessful. When we finally got it right, the results far exceeded our expectations and show Deadvlei as no one has ever seen it before. Each second of video consists of 30 photographs. In total, Marsel shot more than 16,000 images over a period of two years for this project. The video won First Prize in the 2012 Travel Photographer Of The Year Awards. New Vimeo Staff Pick: "Full Moon Silhouettes" by Mark Gee

At Vimeo, the caption says: Full Moon Silhouettes is a real time video of the moon rising over the Mount Victoria Lookout in Wellington, New Zealand. People had gathered up there this night to get the best view possible of the moon rising. I captured the video from 2.1km away on the other side of the city. It's something that I've been wanting to photograph for a long time now, and a lot of planning and failed attempts had taken place. Finally, during moon rise on the 28th January 2013, everything fell into place and I got my footage. The video is as it came off the memory card and there has been no manipulation whatsoever. Technically it was quite a challenge to get the final result. I shot it on a Canon ID MkIV in video mode with a Canon EF 500mm f/4L and a Canon 2x extender II, giving me the equivalent focal length of 1300mm. Up went down, straight flowed curved and rectangles melt oblique. My magnifying eye got lost in the labyrinth of my inner ear.

53 degrees, 46 minutes 40 seconds West. Leonardo Da Costa is a lighthouse keeper stationed in Cabo Polonio, a remote cape in a stretch of Uruguayan coastline rich in shipwrecks and sunken treasures. Cabo Polonio’s light has been guiding ships since 1881, and Da Costa is the latest in a long line of watchmen who have operated the tower with care and attention. He leads an unassuming life, the tranquility of the almost intact landscape keeping him company. Serenity and silence merge with the daily tasks and chores he carries out. Da Costa represents a rare profession that still survives in a few countries. Take some time to appreciate a gentle and enlightening way of life, for once it is gone, it will be missed. *Music by Volt Heist: www.voltheist.com

New Vimeo Staff Pick: "New York Biotopes" by Lena Steinkühler

At Vimeo, the caption says: My graduation project „New York Biotopes“ deals with abstract plants and creatures, which change their forms because of insufficient living space and adapt themselves to the surroundings of the metropolis New York City. A type of metamorphosis, where the newly developed vegetation assimilates elements of the city and makes them useful for their own purposes. These creatures and plants, partly mechanical, partly organically in appearance, spread more and more over the city and fill it up with life. My idea was to create a film, that fills up the metropolis New York with vegetation, that adapts to the straightness of the technology and the given situation. This happens through the assimilation of structures and forms. These biotopes are shaped by the existing living environment, but in turn also shape the newly developed living environment by their presence. In other words, a symbiotically coexistence begins. At Vimeo, the caption says: The Myth Since we started to believe in anything, we also believe in mythical creatures, heros, events or giant buildings. The visual narrative of "The Myth" shows different phases of a nativity, though specific conducts like deformations and transitions between primitives, organic and mechanical stadiums of an futuristic creature, till it changes the appearance to the final destination. The visual look reminds on medical ultrasonic pictures, also the sound environment is related to this aspect. The sound transmit the powerful occasion with synthetic and noisy modulations till it changed to a more realistic ambience. "The Myth" is an abstract translation based upon the mythology "Phoenix", an immortal bird, which is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, the creature obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. Story and Production tsaworks.com

At Vimeo, the caption says: Tony Plant is an Artist like no other. What you see here is just a small cherry on a cake to the Artwork Tony has done over the years. It was during the making of this film i realised the depth to Tonys Artistic talents as he explained to me that in one of the shots there was a pole he had painted red over 6 years ago. He saw the Pole was rotting and the texture of the dyeing grain represented the veins of life decaying away. By painting them Red the Veins stood out. It would only be the Passer by with open Eyes and mind that would see the Pole and see its future within its surroundings....The intention wasn't to Look at the pole. But to stop, and see the beauty we are surrounded by.... Shot in the beautiful setting of Park Head, Near Bedruthen steps on the north coast of Cornwall. New Vimeo Staff Pick: "the Animation of Man - 2012" by Amanda Nedermeijer

At Vimeo, the caption says: My graduation project. I wanted to create something that would not only be fun to watch, but also tell a bit more about the process of animating. Sometimes your ideas and creations seem to have a mind of their own, and although this might actually be a good thing, you just get frustrated because it gets further and further away from your original plan... I animated the whole thing in Toonboom first, then printed everything and cut out a large part. Then, using stop-motion technique, I re-created the animation again. This allowed for me to show a bit of the huge amount of work that goes into animating and it gave me a way to make the animator's presence a bit more tangible. I hope you will enjoy this one!

New Vimeo Staff Pick: "CATERPILLAR" by David Field

At Vimeo, the caption says: Finding your way can mean losing your mind in the process… An isolated elderly woman, in desperate need of stimulation, conjures an infestation of silk-spinning caterpillars, thus leading her to a mind-bending epiphany. ‘Caterpillar’ is a cerebral drama, filmed in the historical Wynkoop House, famous for housing George Washington. The crew consists of highly esteemed artists working across a wide spectrum of disciplines. This includes special effects artist, Ben Bornstein (300, The Fighter), visual effects artist Greg Silverman (Black Swan), and editor, Corey Bayes (Haywire, Contagion, The Informant, Che). From storyline through production, Caterpillar is an ode to the creative process. This film is a must-see for anyone who has ever submitted to their imagination and felt transformed by an idea.
