New Vimeo Staff Pick: "They Are The Last" by Kauri Multimedia

At Vimeo, the caption says: 34 degrees 24 minutes 19 seconds South,
53 degrees, 46 minutes 40 seconds West. Leonardo Da Costa is a lighthouse keeper stationed in Cabo Polonio, a remote cape in a stretch of Uruguayan coastline rich in shipwrecks and sunken treasures. Cabo Polonio’s light has been guiding ships since 1881, and Da Costa is the latest in a long line of watchmen who have operated the tower with care and attention. He leads an unassuming life, the tranquility of the almost intact landscape keeping him company. Serenity and silence merge with the daily tasks and chores he carries out. Da Costa represents a rare profession that still survives in a few countries. Take some time to appreciate a gentle and enlightening way of life, for once it is gone, it will be missed. *Music by Volt Heist: www.voltheist.com

New Vimeo Staff Pick: "New York Biotopes" by Lena Steinkühler

At Vimeo, the caption says: My graduation project „New York Biotopes“ deals with abstract plants and creatures, which change their forms because of insufficient living space and adapt themselves to the surroundings of the metropolis New York City. A type of metamorphosis, where the newly developed vegetation assimilates elements of the city and makes them useful for their own purposes. These creatures and plants, partly mechanical, partly organically in appearance, spread more and more over the city and fill it up with life. My idea was to create a film, that fills up the metropolis New York with vegetation, that adapts to the straightness of the technology and the given situation. This happens through the assimilation of structures and forms. These biotopes are shaped by the existing living environment, but in turn also shape the newly developed living environment by their presence. In other words, a symbiotically coexistence begins. New Vimeo Staff Pick: "THE MYTH" by tsaworks_martin Böttger

At Vimeo, the caption says: The Myth Since we started to believe in anything, we also believe in mythical creatures, heros, events or giant buildings. The visual narrative of "The Myth" shows different phases of a nativity, though specific conducts like deformations and transitions between primitives, organic and mechanical stadiums of an futuristic creature, till it changes the appearance to the final destination. The visual look reminds on medical ultrasonic pictures, also the sound environment is related to this aspect. The sound transmit the powerful occasion with synthetic and noisy modulations till it changed to a more realistic ambience. "The Myth" is an abstract translation based upon the mythology "Phoenix", an immortal bird, which is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, the creature obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. Story and Production tsaworks.com

New Vimeo Staff Pick: "RUARRI JOSEPH :: Till The Luck Runs Dry" by LIGHT COLOUR SOUND

At Vimeo, the caption says: Tony Plant is an Artist like no other. What you see here is just a small cherry on a cake to the Artwork Tony has done over the years. It was during the making of this film i realised the depth to Tonys Artistic talents as he explained to me that in one of the shots there was a pole he had painted red over 6 years ago. He saw the Pole was rotting and the texture of the dyeing grain represented the veins of life decaying away. By painting them Red the Veins stood out. It would only be the Passer by with open Eyes and mind that would see the Pole and see its future within its surroundings....The intention wasn't to Look at the pole. But to stop, and see the beauty we are surrounded by.... Shot in the beautiful setting of Park Head, Near Bedruthen steps on the north coast of Cornwall. A winters day was spent following Tony Plant and capturing one of his amazing Beach Drawings for this music video of Ruarri Joseph's 'Till The Luck Runs Dry'. New Vimeo Staff Pick: "the Animation of Man - 2012" by Amanda Nedermeijer

At Vimeo, the caption says: My graduation project. I wanted to create something that would not only be fun to watch, but also tell a bit more about the process of animating. Sometimes your ideas and creations seem to have a mind of their own, and although this might actually be a good thing, you just get frustrated because it gets further and further away from your original plan... I animated the whole thing in Toonboom first, then printed everything and cut out a large part. Then, using stop-motion technique, I re-created the animation again. This allowed for me to show a bit of the huge amount of work that goes into animating and it gave me a way to make the animator's presence a bit more tangible. I hope you will enjoy this one!

New Vimeo Staff Pick: "CATERPILLAR" by David Field

At Vimeo, the caption says: Finding your way can mean losing your mind in the process… An isolated elderly woman, in desperate need of stimulation, conjures an infestation of silk-spinning caterpillars, thus leading her to a mind-bending epiphany. ‘Caterpillar’ is a cerebral drama, filmed in the historical Wynkoop House, famous for housing George Washington. The crew consists of highly esteemed artists working across a wide spectrum of disciplines. This includes special effects artist, Ben Bornstein (300, The Fighter), visual effects artist Greg Silverman (Black Swan), and editor, Corey Bayes (Haywire, Contagion, The Informant, Che). From storyline through production, Caterpillar is an ode to the creative process. This film is a must-see for anyone who has ever submitted to their imagination and felt transformed by an idea.
